IRD ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES
In 2005, the Institute for Rural Development implemented a DEFRA funded environmental project aimed at improvement of rural water supply and sanitation, and watercourse decontamination.
The project's main point was the development and dissemination of economically efficient and environmentally friendly methods of improving the rural water supply system and purification of small rivers forming potable water resources in rural areas.
As a result of the project implementation a small Kamyanka river was decontaminated (Fursy village, Kyiv oblast) and the adjacent area was developed. Also, a water-pipe was reconstructed to supply quality potable water for Velykoploske village residents in Odesa oblast. Upon completion of these, regional roundtables were organised in Odesa, Bila Tserkva аnd a national event was hold in Kyiv with the participation of leading Ukrainian and international experts to discuss strengths and weaknesses of similar projects and replication possibilities for relevant good practices in Ukraine. Public events also took place in Donetsk and Luhansk to disseminate pilot models developed in Kyiv and Odesa regions. Theoretical and practical aspects were stated in a brochure "Quality Drinking Water for the Rural Community", which was disseminated throughout Ukraine.
Results to be achieved by the project:
- development of good practices of quality drinking water supply for the Velykoploske community in Velyka Mykhaylivka Rayon, Odesa oblast, and purification of a small river in Fursy village in Bila Tserkva Rayon, Kyiv oblast; and
- dissemination of evidence proved approaches for rural water supply and small river purification to interested rural communities in Ukraine.

Project Title: "REPLICABLE METHODS OF IMPROVEMENT OF RURAL WATER SUPPLIES AND SANITATION."
Overall objectives of the project:
To develop and promote replicable methods of improving rural potable water supply and the management of rural water and sanitation to maintain water quality and reduce contamination in rural areas.
Specific objectives of he project:
To develop and implement in selected pilot village communities in two oblasts, replicable and sustainable approaches for potable water supply and sanitation, and watercourse decontamination.
To disseminate successful pilot approaches to the other URLP pilot oblasts of Donetsk and Lugansk with wider promotion at the National level
Expected results of the project implementation:
- Increased awareness by rural communities and local administrations of their region's problems.
- Identification of best, and accessible, practices of dealing with rural water management and contamination.
- Increased awareness of water and sanitation good practices amongst rural populations in pilot areas.
- Specific action plans to overcome local environmental problems relating to water and sanitation in pilot areas.
- Participation of local communities in resolving water and sanitation problems.
- Provision of potable water to selected rural populations.
- Prevention of pollution of groundwater caused by dumping grounds and settling basins of enterprises in pilot areas.
- Decrease in the incidence of infectious diseases caused by unclean water.
- Organization of environmental monitoring in pilot areas.
- Improvement of the environmental policy mechanism.
